In an attempt to replace departing manager Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool had planned to bring in Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. However, Fabrizio Romano has now officially announced that he would remain with the Bundesliga team.
After an outstanding season with Leverkusen, the Reds identified Alonso as one of their main objectives in their search for a new manager. The German team leads Bayern Munich by ten points and is riding high at the top of the Bundesliga. With the Spanish manager leaving before the 2024–2025 season, the Merseyside team will now have to start over from scratch.
Alonso Won’t be Joining Liverpool

Alonso will remain at Bayer Leverkusen this summer, as Italian writer Romano has now verified. An official announcement is expected soon. The 42-year-old has a release clause that goes into effect in 2025, so he’ll be around for at least another season. He has told Liverpool and Bayern Munich, who were both vying for his signing, of his choice to remain in the area.
It’s understandable that the former Liverpool midfielder wants to carry on the project he’s starting with Leverkusen given the German team’s continued participation in three tournaments and their chance to win the Bundesliga this year. Later, Romano stated that Alonso is involved in Leverkusen’s summer transfer window strategy, and that Real Madrid, in addition to Liverpool and Bayern, would continue to keep an eye on their former midfield player.

Liverpool has plenty of time to find a replacement for Alonso, and the backroom staff will already have a long list of managers on hand in case something like this were to happen.
