10 Best Left-Footed Players in Premier League History Ranked by Shearer & Richards

In the annals of Premier League history, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer have ranked the finest left-footers. They were given ten names to pick from, and there were some arguments about the order. Gary Lineker was present to help the two decide.

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, two more recent Premier League arrivals, ranked extremely highly on Shearer’s list; their partnership at the Etihad was outstanding. Ashley Cole, the best left-back in the division’s history, was selected slightly ahead of the two Citizens players.

Though Robbie Fowler was hailed as a greater finisher than his former England teammate, Robin van Persie was unable to threaten the top five names on Shearer’s list. Shearer stated:

Probably the best (finisher). In terms of being natural, he struck me as someone who never really had to work at it. It just sort of happened, whereas I had to work on mine. He was a brilliant finisher.

Two of the best wingers the league has seen in the past 20 years, Arjen Robben (10th) and Gareth Bale (8th) were both low in the pundit’s personal rankings. With the star-studded names to select from, it’s no knock on the ability of the players, and they both finished higher on Richards’ list.

Micah Richards’ Top 10 Left-Footed Players

Some people might be surprised that Richards, an advocate for Manchester City, ranked Foden and Haaland last on his list. The fact that longevity was cited as the explanation demonstrates the retiring defender’s objectivity. The majority of the players the two 23-year-olds are up against have far lengthier resumes in the English premier league.

But he didn’t take long to rank two former teammates in the top three in his ranking. With his refined left foot, David Silva was able to identify any player in any position on the field. Early in the 2010s, Richards and the Spaniard were a part of the same City team.

The host said that the Liverpool star was voted as the clear number one on the list after Lineker used a casting vote to determine who of the two titans, Giggs and Salah, would win:

I just look at Salah’s numbers, in terms of the goals he scored. I know it’s slightly different because Giggs was an out-and-out winger, whereas Mo Salah is a bit of both and plays as a right forward. I am actually going to go with Salah, I love him.

Van Persie was voted as the fourth-best player on the list, while David Silva was the clear favorite to win the bronze medal. Bale could have been able to move up the rankings past sixth if he had stayed in England instead of going to Real Madrid.

Cole did well to compete with some of the best strikers the nation has ever seen, considering he was the only defender to place in the top 10. On the combined list, the Englishman came in just outside the top five, while Robben, Haaland, Fowler, and Foden were all left out.
