Joe Gomez, the player with the longest tenure at Liverpool, is currently attracting interest from Aston Villa in the Premier League.
This summer, the defender has been linked to several transfer rumors. It is said that he was left “perturbed” when he was involved in a deal that would have sent Anthony Gordon to Newcastle and sent the defender somewhere.
According to The Telegraph, Aston Villa has now identified the 15-cap England international as a possible successor in the event that Diego Carlos leaves the team.
Although Gomez has played 51 games for Liverpool this season and can play right across the back line when necessary, there are still rumors that Liverpool is trying to add defensive reinforcements for both left back, where Gomez was heavily involved in the previous campaign, and center half, where he has been used the most throughout his career.
Why would Gomez wish to depart?
Gomez may see fewer playing time if he stays at Anfield this season with the likelihood of defensive reinforcements and the true first-team option that was Jarell Quansah’s rise last season.
Gomez was picked to play for England in the Euros this summer, but he did not play a single minute in the competition. At 27, he may need to prove himself in his club’s starting lineup in order to make a lasting impression on the England team.
This could indicate that Gomez is ready to move away from Charlton Academy after spending nearly ten years in Merseyside, especially in light of rumours that he felt uneasy after being included in the Gordon trade.
What happens to Liverpool next?
Throughout the summer, Liverpool has been linked to several top-tier defenders; but, at the moment, it appears that they are more focused on adding MartÃn Zubimendi to strengthen their defensive midfield than their defense.
Additionally, Sepp van den Berg has not yet left the Reds, and while a trade is likely, it is not assured.
Gomez has drawn interest from several teams, but he doesn’t seem to be planning to try to force a move away from Liverpool if they want to keep him.
If Villa or another team makes an offer that Liverpool can’t refuse, Joe Gomez might be staying in Merseyside for a further year.
