If Martin Zubimendi signs with Liverpool this summer, the team might offer him the ideal welcome present—a former Anfield favorite’s jersey.
Given that the Real Sociedad midfielder is eager to join Arne Slot’s team “with immediate effect” and that Merseyside would undoubtedly welcome him with wide arms, it looks as though the Reds are getting closer to signing him.
In an attempt to address the midfield problems the Reds encountered last season, it was revealed on Wednesday that new manager Slot had selected 25-year-old Zubimendi for the “No. 6” position. Zubimendi is regarded as one of the best in his position throughout Europe and most recently won a medal with Spain at the Euro 2024.
Now that a deal is getting closer, it looks like Liverpool might give Zubimendi the ultimate gift by offering him the No. 6 shirt that Thiago left empty after leaving at the end of the previous campaign. Since the Spaniard has since retired, Zubimendi has the ideal chance to carry on the shirt’s tradition.
The No. 6 shirt is still there for grabs for Zubimendi should he decide to visit Anfield, as the Reds have not added a single player this summer. In truth, Thiago’s final season with the Reds was marred by injuries, and the jersey saw very little action throughout that season.
The midfielder for Real Sociedad is presently wearing the No. 4 shirt for his current team, but if he moves to Anfield, Virgil van Dijk, the captain, will likely force him to wear something different. Once more, everything is in place for Zubimendi to assume the role and the No. 6 shirt.
