Liverpool can replicate Michael Edwards success as Richard Hughes gets welcome gift from FSG

Richard Hughes will have a busy summer ahead of him as he takes on the role of Liverpool’s new sporting director. Although Hughes’ appointment was made official last month, he won’t start working in the position until the current season is out.

He’ll have a number of things on his to-do list as well, the most important of which will undoubtedly be the new manager. The appointment of Jürgen Klopp’s replacement has probably been moving forward at FSG and Michael Edwards, but Hughes will undoubtedly be part in the decision-making process.

Then there is the matter of transfer dealings and new contracts. The likes of Joël Matip and Thiago Alcântara are expected to depart on free transfers, but it remains unclear what the future may hold for Mohamed Salah, while Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also out of contract in a year’s time.

Even though Hughes has done an amazing job at Bournemouth, this could be something of a baptism of fire for the Scot. However, it seems that FSG wants to facilitate his entrance, as Hughes’ assistant will be a familiar figure returning.

David Woodfine left Anfield at the end of the previous season after serving in a variety of capacities for nine years at Liverpool, most recently as director of loan management. Woodfine is expected to be hired as part of the restructuring this summer, according to reports from the Liverpool ECHO and other sources.

He already knows Hughes and Edwards from their time together at Portsmouth. When Hughes was a player at Fratton Park, Woodfine had worked directly under Edwards as a performance analyst.

Subsequently, Edwards brought Woodfine with him to Anfield, and he’s back in a more senior capacity less than a year after he left. Football’s new CEO of FSG seems to be the main motivator behind the appointment.

After more than two decades of a professional and personal connection, he was the one who championed Hughes’ appointment as sporting director. Another reunion on Merseyside is sealed by Woodfine’s return with his No. 2.

Edwards is accustomed to this setup from his initial tenure at Anfield. Julian Ward has witnessed his responsibilities increase at Liverpool during a highly successful era as the team captured both the Premier League and the Champions League.

He greatly impressed FSG and collaborated closely with Edwards on transfers and contract renewals.

According to The Athletic, Ward was rewarded with a promotion to assistant sports director in December 2020 because he was viewed as a crucial liaison between Jürgen Klopp and other departments. However, he would only hold the position for six months officially before Edwards chose to resign, which allowed Ward to take over as the primary sporting director.

Yet since then, everything has been up in the air. Ward was gone after just one season, startling Liverpool with his resignation. Jörg Schmadtke was brought in on a short-term contract, which was terminated at the conclusion of the January transfer window.

When Edwards returned to FSG, though, it was evident that he intended to change a system that had worked well before. Knowing Hughes and Woodfine well, he will be confident in their ability to collaborate during what promises to be the most significant summer in the club’s recent history.

With Woodfine’s familiarity with the club’s operations, the incoming Hughes will surely profit much from his arrival as he settles into his new role. Edwards and Ward serve as an illustration of how this kind of collaboration might succeed.

The future at Anfield will appear even more promising if Liverpool’s new sporting director team can perform as well as the previous one did.
