The second week of the Green Bay Packers’ 2024 training camp is almost over. Ninety-nine players are now vying for 53 roster positions as well as a few spots on the practice squad. These five Packers players have not fared well in training camp, but they still have three preseason games and family night ahead of them. To be considered for the roster, they will have to improve their play.
Packers Players Having Difficulties in the Fifth Training Camp: K Carlson Anders
This year, Anders Carlson had a strong start to camp but a terrible day on Thursday. Of his six field goal attempts, he missed three. Carlson’s problem from the previous year was consistency. The Auburn grad will now be under more pressure on Family Night and in the upcoming sessions following a subpar showing on Thursday.
Veteran Greg Joseph, who has so far shown greater consistency than Carlson, is his rival.
Number Four: G. Royce Newman
Veteran guard Royce Newman renegotiated his contract in July in an attempt to increase his chances of staying on the team. Unfortunately, in order to achieve that aim, the former Ole Miss standout will also need to play better.
As a rookie, Newman had difficulty, particularly learning tricks and blitzes. Over the past two seasons, he has not made much progress in those areas and has been a problem when substituted into the starting lineup.
Even when Josh Myers temporarily shifted from left guard to center, Elgton Jenkins did not start training camp as Newman has not played at the top of the lineup.
Three guys who could play inside offensive line were selected by the Packers in this year’s draft. Even at a lower cost, Newman will need to perform better to maintain his roster place.
Packers Players Having Difficulties in the Third Training Camp: G Sean Ryan
Sean Rhyan was the starting right guard for the Packers going into training camp. During the second half of the 2023 season, the former UCLA standout was seen as the front-runner to take over at that position after trading series with an ailing Jon Runyan, Jr.
However, after just one week, rookie first-round pick Jordan Morgan overtook Rhyan for the #1 spot on the depth chart.
Rhyan performed mediocrely as a run blocker in his first two seasons but had severe pass protection issues. The Packers will not start an offensive tackle who has trouble protecting the pass, endangering the health of Jordan Love.
If Rhyan doesn’t improve, he might not be a starter for the third year in a row.
Number 2: Quarterback Sean Clifford
During Love’s “hold-in” early in training camp, backup quarterback Sean Clifford got a genuine chance to demonstrate his abilities. The Penn State second-year player was practicing with the starting offense because Love would not play until he signed a new contract extension.
Unfortunately, Clifford lost out on this opportunity. Clifford seemed unfocused and threw too many interceptions during the first week of camp.
Michael Pratt, a 2024 seventh-round pick, is competing against Clifford for the position of backup quarterback. Neither player has distinguished themselves yet.
There have been whispers that in the event that neither Clifford nor Pratt show themselves to be adequate, the Packers ought to consider bringing in a seasoned backup.
Packers Players Having Trouble in the First Training Camp: Overtime André Dillard
This offseason, the Packers signed seasoned offensive tackle Andre Dillard as a free agent. Despite possessing all the physical attributes and athleticism scouts look for in an offensive tackle, the former first-round pick out of Washington State has failed to live up to expectations in his first four NFL seasons.
Dillard started ten games for the Titans last season, a career best. He was benched midseason, but following an injury, he was back in the starting lineup.
During the first week of training camp, Dillard started at right tackle since Zach Tom was out with a torn pectoral muscle. Rashan Gary, the defensive end, relentlessly and severely battered him.
Dillard was the frontrunner to take over as the swing tackle, but after a subpar showing in the first week of camp, he might not make the squad. If he wants to stay with the Pack, he will need to have a great preseason.
